Homeless Youth Assistance Program (HYAP) - Southern NSW

The Program provides services to maintain or return young people and unaccompanied youth aged 12-15 years with their families or to help them transition to longer-term supported accommodation, whilst also supporting them in education, training and jobs.

The target group includes young people who are living in unstable home environments, sleeping rough, homelessness shelters, and those who are staying temporarily at the homes of friends, relatives or acquaintances.

In Southern NSW the Program will be delivered through brokerage and case management services provided in partnership with three key youth crisis services in Moruya, Goulburn, and Queanbeyan. It will also extend to Cooma through a partnership with Campbell Page's Reconnect Service and Mission Australia's Homelessness Service; and to Bega through a partnership with South East Women and Children's Service and South East Youth Accommodation Service.

The Program in Southern NSW has no funded capacity for crisis accommodation but may be able to provide this on a case by case basis under exceptional circumstances through a brokerage.

The Program will work closely with the young people, their parents or legal guardian and Families and Community Services (FACS) in order to meet the immediate needs and ensure the safety and well-being of the child. Careful assessment will determine if the child can be supported by HYAP or if it is a child protection issue and therefore FACS take lead case management responsibility.

HYAP will compliment SYFS’ existing suite of services for children and young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness including Supported Accommodation and Housing; Family Services; and Employment, Education, and Training.
